EVs and Hybrids: What an Independent Shop Can and Can't Work On

June 5, 2025 · The Rebel Yell

EVs and hybrids still need brakes, tires and suspension. Here's what an independent shop can do — and where the high-voltage line is.

The conventional work we do

An EV still has brakes, tires, suspension, and a cabin. A hybrid has all of that plus an engine. We handle the conventional side — brake pads and rotors, tire sales and mount/balance, suspension, alignments, and routine maintenance — on EVs and hybrids just like anything else.

Where the high-voltage line is

We don't work on high-voltage battery or drive systems. That's specialized equipment and training, and it belongs at a shop set up for it. We'll tell you straight if your issue is on the high-voltage side.

Heavier vehicles wear tires faster

EVs are heavy because batteries are heavy. That weight wears tires faster, especially if alignment is off. Rotation matters more on an EV than on a lighter car — keep up with it.

Sticking calipers from regen and salt

Regenerative braking means the friction brakes get used less, which sounds great — until a caliper sticks from disuse and corrosion. Add salt to the mix and brake hardware needs attention even when the pads look fine. It's worth checking, not assuming.

Shop Tip

Don't ignore the brakes just because the car mostly regen-brakes. The friction brakes still need to work the day you need them in a panic stop.
